Claymore: the manga doesn’t inspire me to continue with the anime

Published by Karura under Manga

Chapters 1-73
When the demonic creatures known as Youma begin preying on humanity, there is only thing that can stand against them- the Claymores, women infused with Youma flesh and named for the giant swords they carry. Despite being the lowest ranked of them all, the Claymore known as Clare is driven by a fierce determination forged by a tragic event in her past, but in a world where the shady organisation that controls them is arguably as dangerous as the very monsters they must fight, she may find herself becoming little more than a pawn in a larger game.

Ichijo Mashiro has a secret- for all that he chosen to look and act like a man, the truth is that his body is not completely one gender or the other. Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha A’s: the manga

Published by Karura under Manga

Long before StrikerS came along and irretrievably damaged the reputation of the Nanoha franchise, I decided to acquire the eight chapters that comprised the Nanoha A’s manga. By the time I came to read it, I wasn’t even sure if I still wanted to, but since it was a) bearably short and b) sitting on my hard drive with a silent determination to be addressed one day, I decided that I might as well go ahead and get it out of the way.

Otogi Zoshi: the manga

Published by Karura under Manga

Minamoto no Hikaru may be a girl, but she certainly doesn’t want to act like one. She’d much rather be out swinging her sword around like her beloved big brother Raikou than sitting around demurely waiting for him to come home- and even the best efforts of her father aren’t going to change her way of thinking. But what started out as a bit of childish fun becomes something far more serious when Hikaru becomes embroiled in a plot to take revenge on her brother for the massacre of a village. Can Hikaru really step up to the plate and defend the ailing Raikou now that the stakes have become so much higher? Continue Reading »

Level E: The E stands for ‘Alien’

Published by Karura under Manga

The title of this post is not a joke; Togashi meant to call this Level A(lien), but his command of English was such that he thought ‘Eirien’ began with E.

Although most humans remain blissfully unaware of it, aliens have been coming to Earth for many years, driven by everything from a desire to commit illegal activities to a wholehearted devotion to the sport of baseball. For those in the know, the most infamous of these aliens must surely be Ouji, First Prince of the planet Dogra, a man as twisted as he is brilliant. From his long suffering bodyguards to the various humans who get caught up in his web, everyone would agree that life is certainly more interesting when Ouji is around, but it also tends to get a lot more complicated.

Elfen Lied volumes 1-8: It just doesn’t grab me in the way that the anime did

Published by Karura under Manga

In the course of Earth’s history, it has inevitably been the case that one species has risen to dominance, only to eventually be superseded by another- and with the emergence of the two-horned Diclonius, it seems that humanity’s time has inevitably come. Able to manipulate matter with invisible hands known as vectors, and consumed by the desire to kill all humans from an early age, the Diclonii are deadly and dangerous- and college student Kohta has just unwittingly invited Lucy, the most lethal of them all, into his home. Fortunately for him, however, a blow to Lucy’s head has caused a gentler and more benign personality named ‘Nyu’ to emerge, but how long will it be until she reverts to her murderous state? Whatever the case, it looks like Kohta has become irrevocably woven into the lives of both the Diclonii and those who wish to research them.

Ceres, Celestial Legend: Anime vs. Manga

Published by Karura under Anime Appraisals, Manga

As a newbie anime fan, one of the earliest series I ever watched was Ceres, Celestial Legend. Fuelled by a desire to expand my experience with Yuu Watase beyond Fushigi Yuugi, I watched all 24 episodes of the anime in the course of about three evenings, and at the time, it seemed a worthy endeavour. Thus it was that in more recent times, I decided to revisit the series by way of the original manga and a rewatching of the anime- and it was only then that I could see how bad the animated version actually is.
