I've mentioned this before here, but Star Ocean 3 has the dubious distinction that it's been the only RPG I've ever spontaneously stopped playing due to the horrible, horrible "twist". I greatly enjoyed the first disk, and the characters and their interrelationships, but after the twist suspension of disbelief just got blasted away. I signed up for a futuristic RPG, not enter the damn Matrix.

Not only that, it even takes pains (10 wise men explanation) to cheapen the rest of the games in the entire series. I simply have to discount it as canon so it doesn't taint the fantastic Star Ocean 2 for me.

Anyway, back on the first disk I did enjoy the nods to the previous games, like the reference to Celine in the battle simulator at the start of the game, and Fayt's unlockable Claude costume in the multiplayer battle simulator.

Also combo chaining up to 300% was damn fun :)

>> I should really try Lunar, but Suikoden II has long since been played, completed and enjoyed

Yes, you should. Lunar's game mechanics compare quite badly to Lunar 2's, but the characters and story are so much better it's untrue. The bosses are actually pretty challenging too, since they scale with your level, so strategy is actually required, rather than just hammering them with your best magic.

And lastly, I bet you enjoyed Suikoden 2 for all that HARD GAY angst between Riou and Jowy XD

manga: Strong attacks do break it, but the last few hits in BoF don't seem to.

Instant death spells are cheap, which is why AI's final boss is luck of the draw- if Klein dies, it's all over, but I was lucky to be able to skill break him a lot on my second attempt. In 3 the hardest boss for me is the super mini-puni, looks so weak but when it summons a second or third companion it's all over for me.

Oh yeah, and I finished Heroes of Mana tonight, also been playing Digital Devil Saga.

Well, that I can understand, but I think i remember that strong attacks breaks the AAA and lets you attack anyway?

Since I usually kinda killed the enemies before they could do anything. It was first when I started going trough the optional dungeons that I encountered problems. Now there is like one enemy that can kill me, all other well I kinda kill them fast and hard. Most because I got Maria´s ultimate attack, a wide laser beam that inflicts both MP and HP damage and at the same time stunns the opponent so s/he can´t move :)

Atelier Iris 1 and 2´s Final bosses are killing me pretty easy with Atelier Iris being the worst, I hate instant death spells. Atelier Iris 2 is more manageable, but makes to much damage on my team.

Atelier Iris 3 is the easiest of them, but with my team I´m just to weak.

I love Star Ocean 3.
But somehow didn't finish the game.
I got stuck and I don't know what to do next.
I am near the end of the game but I'm too lazy to finish it.
Because when you got to the 'twist' (you know that part when you reach it), the story got boring and I don't understand a thing.
So..yea, I wonder if I will finish the game someday..

I never played the previous Star Ocean games, not going to I guess.
I'm gonna wait for the upcoming ones.

manga: I have done that combo but what I don't like about it is if the enemy reaches max Fury then the last few hits of Blade of Fury just bounce off its shield.

I never even did that much with my weapons, so the final boss was hard, but in contrast the Atelier Iris final bosses have always been easy for me so it all balances out ;)

ritchan: I need to get back to SO1, but with the remake coming out it's hard to motivate myself. I should really try Lunar, but Suikoden II has long since been played, completed and enjoyed :)

By the way, I find Lunar very entertaining. Play Lunar. And Suikoden 2 is probably right up there with FFVII, if not better. It's just way more complex and has a twistier plot, although the atmosphere isn't as strong as in FFVII.

Some of your complaints have been there since Tri-Ace made Star Ocean 1... there isn't a world map, for instance. The spark ring and pickaxe have been staples since the first Tales of Phantasia for SNES.

BTW, I hated SO2. I tried really hard to get over the graphics, but coming from the luscious background of SO1, it just really disappointed me and I never played it again.

And I still need a PS2... SO3, along with Xenosaga, was one of the reasons why I wanted a PS2 back in 2001... and it still is, now, along Persona 3.

Try comboing Fayt´s Side Kick with Blade of Fury. It works wonders. That´s what I used before getting to know the full power of I think it was Dimension Door.

You start of by using Side Kick, which makes Fayt run towards the enemy, it starts attacking you but thanks to Side Kick you take a leap to the side, attack avoided, then burst out Blade of Fury and oh the enemy is in for pain.

I found the battles to be really fun, maybe because I played with Fayt and hade the above combo, but battles were fast and easy, save for some battles where the boss were in the air the whole time.

For the last battle, I think it lasted like 10seconds for me, and that´s counting both of the phases...
And then I had only spent time making Mythril and Boots of Prowess which were refined into a 1000+ ATK and 30% + Def/Atk placed on a good sword.

Boom I tell you :)

As SO3 was my very first SO game I´m currently waiting for SO4 for PS3 and the bundle with SO1 & 2 for PSP so I can complete my collection. And since I watched a speedrun for SO2 I really want to play it. The anime was kinda good as well.
