Fuuko's was great at the time but I didn't really *get* those cameos either; Kotomi's was rather dull unfortunately. The rushed area you mentioned - that of Ryou, Kyou and Tomoyo - had a really good balance of comedy and genuine dorama. I wish that this part of the story had been given more attention actually, but I think Tomoya as a lead character invariably helps. As a matter of fact, I also agree that Nagisa's parents were brilliant as supporting characters. It was an experiment of sorts for me since I've never bought into the Key adaptations thing, but I'll leave my final judgement for when I've seen the after-story. Anyways you shouldn't be so hard on Clannad since Nagisa's story is still far from the end, actually it will probably surprise you in a good way especially if you liked Air.
