Aside from that, I absolutely loved Lucky Star from beginning to end - It really worked perfectly for me with regard to both its humour and the main characters. I can certainly see it being a very subjective thing on both of those counts though. References to Street Fighter 2, Kanon and probably Guilty Gear was really something. And that´s just some stuff that I saw at the moment, I must have missed a lot of stuff as well. The initial D scen was also really nice. I don´t know why, but Lucky Star was really fun to watch for me. But Plenair isn´t some minor character :p she´s very popular you know. As for liking it, somehow it feels like you have to watch and play a lot of stuff to make most of the jokes out. And that is a kind of weakness for Lucky Star. All in all, I enjoyed it. Minami ke was boring when comparing to Lucky Star. Having people joke about visual novels and much more left me laughing so hard many times.

Certainly I can't say I worship it as much as the current Otaku culture seems to. I have a feeling in a few more years it'll be incredibly dated. It's a show of the moment. I think in the end, the biggest reason I kept watching was for Kuroi-sensei. It was a nice attempt of Kyoani, but nearly all of the jokes just fell flat, and like you said: there hardly was any build-up. I'm curious: have you ever watched Gintama? That's one example of a comedy, done right, and it's probably amongst Sunrise's best work of the past couple of years. I agree.
