I actually preferred that they didn't reveal anything about the Medicine Seller or his background. For characters like him, it's much more effective to keep the audience in the dark, because no single explanation could hope to fulfill all the vague expectations and hazy possibilities the audience has conjured up in their minds. It's better to keep it a mystery.

True enough, the magic of Mushishi wasn't noticeably diminished with the revelation of Ginko's past, but for every Mushishi there's a King of Bandit Jing; the series did a fabulous job of keeping the eponymous Jing a fascinating mystery, but the OVA pretty much ruined everything as it started delving into his childhood.

P.S. Oddly enough, the first arc of Mononoke was actually probably one of my favourites.

P.P.S. Mononoke makes me want to go out and buy some lipstick.

P.P.P.S. Gankutsuou ain't got nuthin' on Mononoke.
