I guess you have not read the original novels. There are more than 20+ books on the original Lodoss Story. In the sequence of the Record of Lodoss War, The ROLW Next Generation, it revealed that Neece is actually the Evil High Priestess of Kardis. And that the story is instead of going against darkness, it is about accepting darkness and allying with Darkness.

And further more, the Legend of Lodoss, which is a 6 books novel series of the Six heroes in the Lodoss History, the leading role characters actually all died in the end. In depth, these stories are about the inner conflict more than purely Heroes versus Vallains. If you got a chance to read about the Story of Ashuram and how he led the Marmo people to the journey of a new land, even the vallain can be the leading role character. Afterall, Lodoss is not a story about Good versus Evil.

However, due to simplicity, TV station probably chose the two story lines that are most significant and than much simplfied to remove all the political and social elements from it. If you are disappointed with the TV or OVA adaptation, try the novels... you will be amazed. However, it is not translated in English...
